So you’ve bought or are thinking of buying a 3d printer. Now you’re wondering ‘what can I actually print?’
In short, you can design and print anything your imagination can come up with. From bottle openers to a fully wearable Iron-man or Storm-trooper costume. The sky really is the limit.
But don’t worry. You don’t have to be a designing guru to be able to locate and print any of a near-endless catalogue of 3d printer designs… here are just a few..
4 Simple Steps to 3d Printing.
- Search the web for designs at sites like Thingiverse
- Download the design (or ‘Thing’) you want to print. This will be in a ‘STL’ file format but don’t worry, I’ll cover that next.
- The software needed to make your 3d printer do it’s magic is called a ‘Slicer’. Most 3d printers come with this software on a memory card. However, here are a few that you can download (both free and paid for – Cura, S3D, ). Simply download one and install it. For a comprehensive list of these ‘Slicers’ click here.
- The ‘Slicer will ‘Slice’ your model like a cake (except across the horizontal plane) and save it in a file format usable by your 3d printer. This is called ‘G-code’. Load the ‘G-code’ file onto your 3d printer and click print..
Now for the Designs….
There are so many wonderful designs to choose from. From the things you can’t live without to the stuff that makes you think ‘why?’.. Anything is possible. But don’t just take my word for it..
