The Potential of 3d Printing

So you’ve bought or are thinking of buying a 3d printer. Now you’re wondering ‘what can I actually print?’

In short, you can design and print anything your imagination can come up with. From bottle openers to a fully wearable Iron-man or Storm-trooper costume. The sky really is the limit.

But don’t worry. You don’t have to be a designing guru to be able to locate and print any of a near-endless catalogue of 3d printer designs… here are just a few..

4 Simple Steps to 3d Printing.

  1. Search the web for designs at sites like Thingiverse
  2. Download the design (or ‘Thing’) you want to print. This will be in a ‘STL’ file format but don’t worry, I’ll cover that next.
  3. The software needed to make your 3d printer do it’s magic is called a ‘Slicer’. Most 3d printers come with this software on a memory card. However, here are a few that you can download (both free and paid for – Cura, S3D, ). Simply download one and install it. For a comprehensive list of these ‘Slicers’ click here.
  4. The ‘Slicer will ‘Slice’ your model like a cake (except across the horizontal plane) and save it in a file format usable by your 3d printer. This is called ‘G-code’. Load the ‘G-code’ file onto your 3d printer and click print..
